Your Guide to Easy Artificial Grass Installation at Home

February 27, 2024    By:  lawnmin

Artificial grass installation, once primarily installed only in sports fields and commercial spaces, has become increasingly popular among homeowners seeking low-maintenance, lush green lawns without the hassle of regular upkeep.

Installing artificial grass can transform your outdoor space into a beautiful, functional area for relaxation and entertainment. However, to achieve the best results, proper installation is key.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the DIY artificial grass installation process.

Assess Your Space

Before diving into the artificial grass installation process, assess your outdoor area. Measure the space accurately to determine how much artificial turf you’ll need.

Consider factors such as slopes, drainage, and existing landscaping features. Clear the area of any debris, rocks, or vegetation to create a clean, level surface for installation.

Gather Supplies

Grab all the necessary supplies for the installation process. This typically includes artificial grass rolls, weed barrier fabric, infill material (such as silica sand or rubber granules), adhesive or seaming tape, a turf cutter or utility knife, a power brush or broom, and landscape stakes.

Prepare the Ground

Proper groundwork is crucial for a successful artificial grass installation.

Start by excavating the existing soil to a depth of around 100mm. This allows for a space for the base materials.

Install a geotextile cloth to give the base more stability .

Install the Base

Once the ground is prepared, it’s time to install the base material. This typically consists of a combination of crushed stone aggregate gap/20 with gap/7 topping .

Spread the base material evenly across the area and compact it using a plate compactor to create a stable foundation for the artificial grass.

Put the Artificial Grass

Roll out the artificial grass over the prepared base, allowing it to acclimate to the temperature and flatten out any wrinkles. Trim any excess grass using a turf cutter or utility knife, ensuring a precise fit around edges and obstacles.

If joining multiple rolls, use adhesive or seaming tape to secure the seams and create a seamless appearance.

Add Infill

Infill material is essential for maintaining the appearance and stability of artificial grass. Spread the infill material evenly over the surface of the grass using a drop spreader or by hand.

Brush or rake the infill into the grass fibres to ensure proper distribution and prevent matting.

Brush and Apply Final Touches

Once the infill is evenly distributed, use a power brush or broom to brush the grass fibres upright and remove any excess debris. This helps achieve a natural, uniform look and enhances the resilience of the grass.

Secure the edges of the artificial grass using landscape stakes to prevent shifting or lifting.
