Cool Turf uses advanced heat-reducing yarn technology designed to reflect more incoming solar radiation and absorb less energy as heat than conventional artificial turf yarns. The fibres incorporate UV-stabilised pigments and specialised IR-reflective technology to help reduce heat build-up when exposed to direct sunlight.
Depending on the application, Cool Turf can be manufactured with premium PU backing or selected FlowTech Open-Mesh backing, allowing the turf construction to be matched to the drainage, durability and performance requirements of the installation.
Artificial grass can become significantly hotter than natural grass when exposed to direct sunlight. A 2024 peer-reviewed systematic review examined 23 studies investigating the thermal environment of synthetic grass and found that synthetic grass surface temperatures were consistently higher than natural grass.
Importantly, the research also found that artificial turf construction matters. Different turf fibres and cooling technologies produced different surface temperatures, with some modified turf fibres and cooling systems reducing synthetic turf surface temperatures.
